Make a YouTube thumbnail

Build a bold, readable thumbnail at 1280×720 with the Designer.

Fastest way

  1. Open Designer and tap New design. On a phone, open the menu (≡) at the top right to find Designer.

  2. Type your Headline. Size starts on YouTube Thumbnail and Layout on Bold thumbnail.

  3. Tap Create 1280×720 design.

  4. With nothing selected, tap Choose a background image, or describe a scene under Generate a background and tap Generate.

  5. Tap PNG to download, or Save to Assets. On a phone, use the download and save icons at the top right.

Start from an image you made

  1. Open the image in Assets and tap Add text in Designer.

  2. In New design, under Size, choose YouTube Thumbnail.

  3. Pick a Layout and tap Create 1280×720 design. The design starts with your image as the background.

Tips for thumbnails that get clicked

  • Keep the headline to a few words. Bold thumbnail uses huge outlined letters for this.

  • Raise Darken on the background so text stands out.

  • Select an image layer and tap Remove background to cut out yourself or a product, then raise its Outline for the classic cut-out look.

  • For words inside an AI image itself, use the Typography model in Studio.
